Location: India System Scope: Greenfield compressed bio-gas (CBG) plant, taken from concept to a contracted, commissioning-ready asset Sector: Circular Economy / Bioenergy
CHALLENGE
Rural Maharashtra generates vast volumes of organic waste — crop residue, sugar-mill press mud, and poultry litter — much of which is burned or landfilled, releasing CO2 and methane and degrading local air quality. At the same time, India relies heavily on imported natural gas and CNG, creating an energy-security and cost exposure across its value chains. The client set out to solve both problems at once: a bankable route to high-purity compressed bio-gas (CBG) that meets city-gas standards.
KEY OUTCOMES
Waste Diverted at Scale: 100+ tonnes/day of organic waste closed into the loop instead of burned or landfilled. Fossil Fuel Displacement: 5 TPD of pipeline-grade CBG displacing fossil natural gas and CNG. Circular Soil Benefit: Organic manure returned to soil, replacing synthetic fertiliser. Air Quality Improvement: Cleaner regional air from reduced open burning of agricultural residue. Rural Economic Impact: Rural livelihoods supported across feedstock aggregation, operations and logistics. Policy Alignment: Advances India's SATAT/GOBARdhan programme and its 5% CBG blending target by FY29.
SOLUTION
The project was developed to move from a greenfield concept to a contracted, commissioning-ready compressed bio-gas plant: Two-Stage Anaerobic Digestion A two-stage batch hydrolysis anaerobic digestion process breaks down mixed organic feedstock. Membrane Gas Upgrading A membrane upgrading system lifts raw biogas to 95-99% methane purity, meeting IS16087:2025 standards. High-Pressure Compression Gas compressed to 250 bar for cascade bottling and distribution. Secured Offtake Structure A tripartite agreement locked in long-term offtake before commissioning. End-to-End Delivery Hedge5 managed the project from concept through to a contracted, commissioning-ready plant.
