Location: UAE System Scope: Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) across electricity & water meters. Key Components: IoT gateways with edge computing, NB-IoT backhaul, and an intelligent Head End System supporting multiple communication protocols simultaneously.

CHALLENGE: The service area was equipped with a highly fragmented meter ecosystem, 59 meter varieties across 15 manufacturer brands, running on 11 different communication protocols. This diversity made it difficult to establish a resilient, real-time communication infrastructure, leaving the utility exposed to disruptions in data acquisition and unable to manage its electricity and water meters through a single, unified system.

SOLUTION: The system was designed not just to collect meter data, but as a resilient, protocol-agnostic infrastructure capable of unifying a highly fragmented meter ecosystem into one real-time data pipeline:

  • IoT Gateways with Edge Computing Deployed across service areas to pull data from electricity and water meters hourly, cutting latency and easing load on the central system.
  • NB-IoT Backhaul Selected for cost-effective, long-distance transmission, ensuring dependable data retrieval from remote meters.
  • Customized Gateway Engineering Purpose-built gateways supporting multiple meter protocols simultaneously, rather than requiring separate hardware per protocol.
  • Intelligent Head End System Managed northbound and southbound integrations across diverse meter types using MQTT, SFTP, CoAP, REST API, Protobuf, and NTP server, plus firmware-over-the-air and network management to keep gateways healthy remotely.
